South Fraser Perimeter Road – hot topic for Chamber members
Some of the reasons the South Fraser Perimeter Road is part of the solution to transportation challenges in Delta and area are: it will bring consumer goods to local Delta businesses, provide an efficient east/west route South of the Fraser and reduce today’s traffic
congestion, idling and noise.
Geoff Freer, Executive Director of the $3 billion Gateway Program, presented this perspective on the SFP Road to more than 50 people at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s first business networking luncheon of the 2008/09 season on September 18, 2008.
The Road is a key element in Gateway, a regional transportation program of road and bridge improvements along and across the Fraser River, including the twinning of Port Mann Bridge, improving Highway 1 from Vancouver to Langley, and the North and South Fraser Perimeter Roads.
Mr. Freer said that the SFP Road is part of an overall balanced solution for transportation demands in the area. Other elements of the solution include short sea shipping, more effective use of rail, public transit and road improvements in addition to the SFP Road.
Consideration has also been given to the community benefit, remediation of the landfill site, agricultural enhancements and Burns Bog. Early work on the SFP Road has already begun in Surrey. Road design and construction is planned for 2009 through 2012, with completion in December 2012.
