Policy Resolution Update

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce recently published an update, including progress on "Canada’s Gateways", which relates to the resolution submitted by the Delta, Prince George and Halifax Chambers of Commerce and adopted last September.

Canada’s Gateways
√ In November 2007, the government of Canada announced a $33 billion Building Canada Plan containing $1 billion for the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative and $2.1 billion for the Gateways and Border Crossings Fund.
√ Throughout 2007, the government of Canada announced funding for 10 projects in Western Canada under the Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative.
√ On July 30, 2007, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed by the federal, Ontario, and Quebec governments. The Ontario-Quebec Continental Gateway and Trade Corridor will analyze the Ontario and Quebec strategic, integrated, and globally competitive transportation
systems to enhance their performance and meet current and future demand for freight transportation.
√ On October 14, 2007, an MOU was signed by the government of Canada and the governments of the Atlantic provinces, providing the framework for collaboration on an Atlantic Gateway strategy to be established over 24 months.
√ The government of Canada and a number of provincial governments led trade missions to China, India, and other East Asian countries to promote Canada’s gateways to North America
